Life-Saving Words

Jim Fay, one of the founders of Love and Logic® Institute, encourages parents to use the phrase "no problem" when dealing with kids' behavior.  He talks of one parent who used the phrase to remind herself to stay in check and use the techniques she had been learning and practicing, in order not to revert back to old habits that produced nothing but conflict between herself and her son.

Jim Fay emphasizes the use of this phrase means "It's not a problem for me."  Rather, it is up to the child to decide which way they will deal with the problem.  In our home, when I use this phrase, one of my children yells, "NO!!!!"  He's been used to mom taking on his problem, exploding into anger and not really dealing with the underlying issue of his heart.

He is learning a valuable lesson at a very young age - to own his problem and decide his own path - in a safe environment where failure is addressed with love, forgiveness, and used as an opportunity to teach life lessons.
